Berwick Upon Tweed

Berwick Upon Tweed, England's most northern town. Long fought over by the Scots and the English, in the 300 years that followed 1100, Berwick changed hands 13 times. Because of all this fighting Berwick is the only town in Britain completely surrounded by fortified walls.

There are two sets of walls around Berwick, although there is bugger all left of the first, but bits can be found. The first built around the reign of Edward II. The first stone were laid for the present ones in 1558, these are the one that are still intact. In their day they were state of the art military technology. A pleasant walk can be had wandering the walls, there are some great wide opens views to be had.

From the walls you can see the fine Georgian and Regency buildings, coastal views and eventually walk down through a wooded area to the river with its bridges and famous swans.
