The central plateau on New Zealand's North Island is the main volcanic area stretching from White Island in the East to Mount Taranaki in the West, central plateau was most active some 2000 years. Since 1995 Mt Ruaphu the tallest mountain on the North Island has had a series of eruptions spewing out rock and clouds of ash and steam. Taupo, on Lake Taupo, is the region's main tourist town, and has attractions to rival Queenstown. Some of the highlights of the region include. •Visiting Tongariro National Park and walking the famous tongariro crossing. •Gliding or skydiving over lake taupo. •Exploring Wairakei Park and its thermal regions. •Cruising the lakes around rotorua, rotomahana and tarawera. •Absorbing some Maori culture at a show in Rototua. •Visiting the glowworm caves at Waitomo.
Rotorua Experience some of the geothermal wonders around Rotorua. Rotorua is the geothermal hot spot of the north island, no where in New Zealand is the volcanic history more evident. The smell of rotten eggs about the places takes a little getting used to. For people not used to seeing volcanic activity it is a fascinating place to visit. You don’t have to travel far to find it either.	Tongariro National Park. Tongariro Crossing. One of the finest one-day walks in New Zealand the Tongariro Crossing covers most of the many spectacular features in the Tongariro National Park. Bring lots of sandwiches a sturdy pair of boots. you will see some spectacular views so don't forget your camera.
Taupo Kayaking to the carvings on lake Taupo. Taupo is the Queenstown of the North Island, with a long list of attractions close proximity to the town and letter of activities, ranging from fishing and boating on the lake to the more adrenalin pumping bungee jumping and sky diving. It's no wonder Taupo is a popular stop off point.	Waitomo Beaches around Waitomo. Waitomo is famous for its glowworm caves, that caves are certainly worth a visit. Take some time to explore the surrounding areas around as the scenery is stunning.
Wai o tupu. Watching the lady knox geyser errupting at the Wai o tupu thermal is certainly a highlight when you are in the central plateau. Watching people get wet or getting wet yourself is great fun.	Thermal reserve at Wai o tupu.
