Rotorua

Rotorua is the geothermal hot spot of the north island, no where in New Zealand is the volcanic history more evident. The smell of rotten eggs about the places takes a little getting used to. For people not used to seeing volcanic activity it is a fascinating place to visit. You don’t have to travel far to find it either.

Situated on the banks of lake rotorua, rotorua is a thriving town, though mainly tourist traffic. The lake itself provides many activities, not least are scenic flights over Mount Tarawera.

Bubbling mud is a common site in Rotorua

How about a mud bath in your back garden

Just walking along the lake front there are places where steam just hisses from the ground. Residents around the area use old exhaust pipes to lift the venting steam above there houses, I guess this also cuts down on the noise of the venting steam.

Bubbling mud pools are a common site around Rotorua, how would you like one in you back yard. Although straight out out of the ground it is too hot to touch, it does make good skin cream, so I'm told.

Rotorua Museum

Rotorua museum

Rotorua museum is an impressive place to visit, based in te old Bath House. The building is the old tudor style Government Gardens. Built in 1908 the Bath House was an elegant spa retreat; then during the first world war the bath house was used to rehabilitate returning soldiers.

It's a fascinating place to look around, there is a good exhibition of treasures from the local Arawa people.

There is a video explaining the 1886 eruption of Mt Tarawera, and how in Maori legend a ghostly war canoe appears fortelling the eruption of the mountain.
