Rotorua

Maori culture is strong in Rotorua, and there are a number of cultural demonstration around. Any of which is worth visiting. I went to Te Whakarewarewa, which is a shorten version of the full name, ‘TeWhakarewarewatanga o te Ope Taua a Wahiao’ which in English means ‘ The Gathering together of the war party of Wahiao’

Carving

And see the finished work

See how people used to live a couple of hundred years ago

Whakarewarewa village is actually a populated village, people actually go about there daily lives. The Maori community give tours and demonstrations of there culture. It’s a fascinating place to visit.

You also get a chance to see ‘Big Splash Geyser’ or Pohutu Geyser to give it it’s Maori name. Be sure to bring you cameras.

A must see is the Haka

There are regular concerts and cultural displays late morning and just after lunch. You will of course see the Haka the fearsome war dance. Rugby fans will no doubt have seen the All Blacks demostrate this. Other features of the concerts is the Poi dances, action songs and hand games.
