Wellington zoo.Wellington zoo is a well presented zoo having a wide variety of native and non-native animals. There is an outdoor lion and chimpanzee park plus a nocturnal Kiwi house which also houses jobs to Tuatara and giant weta. The zoo itself is 4 km south of the city centre there are regular buses which run to the zoo. When I visited the only downside will was finding somewhere to park though there is usually a place outside where you can abandon your vehicle. Sorry park your vehicle.

'Malayan sun bear''Sun Bears get their name from the yellow-ish mark on their chests which is said to resemble the rising sun. However, these marks can vary and may be completely lacking. They are the smallest of the eight species of bear. I liked the casual way the bears sit and watch the world go by.' 'As protection from predators (tigers and leopards) the Sun Bear has very loose skin around its neck. If grabbed from behind, the bear can wriggle its body inside its skin, far enough to turn around and bite back! ' |
Oriental Small Claw Otter.'The Asian small-clawed otter is the smallest of all the otter species and one of the most attractive, sporting a velvety, burnt umber coat, white chin and neck, and pink nose. Their streamlined, sinuous bodies make them superb aquatic hunters, enabling them to swim much faster and farther than chunky aquatic rodents like the beaver.' 'Otters use their Whiskers to sense turbulence in the water caused by fish, which they use to locate prey in murky water.' You can even have a conversation with the otters.
Wellington Zoo is New Zealand's oldest zoo, Wellington Zoo was founded in 1906 when a young lion was presented to Wellington city by the Bostok and Wombwell Circus. Now there is over 500 different animals at the zoo. The lion, named 'King Dick', after Prime Minister Richard Seddon, was initially housed at Wellington's Botanic Gardens along with a small collection of animals. In 1907 the City Council developed a part of Newtown Park into New Zealand's first zoo. The Zoo grew rapidly, and by 1912 around 500 animals were housed in cages, aviaries and a huge sea lion pool. 'Slender tailed meerkat''Meerkats apparently have a resistance to scorpion and snake venom. The black coloration around their eyes helps protect against the constant glare of the sun.' |
